LINEN BACKING
When your item(s) arrive at our shop, its paper may be fragile and in need of linen backing. Linen backing is a service provided to stabilize your paper using a fully reversible archive adhesive and mounted to acid-free paper lined on cotton duck canvas. This method is very common and ideal whether you intend to immediately frame your poster or keep it rolled in storage. This is our most popular service!
RESTORATION
This process includes techniques to improve cosmetic issues such as tears, fold line wear, missing paper or chips, staining, etc. Restoration is ‘optional’ and is entirely dependent on your taste and budget. It is overall preferred to address restoration issues with a minimalist approach while using archival materials and mediums. Color matching is used often to ensure the achievement of the clients desired results. This can also include tape removal which is also necessary for linen backing, and relining if needed. If relining is needed, the poster is lightly soaked and re-linen backed (see washing).
Some collectors prefer no restoration and choose to display the original patina as a testament of age, adding character to the poster. In this case, stabilization (or linen backing) is the preferred method of conservation.
WASHING
Washing is ultimately the process of lightening your paper material. We use a safe and gentle conservation mixture whether your poster needs a bath or just a light “shower.” Based on the acidic level of your paper, this process can alleviate staining, foxing, and/or some toning.
